HOSPICES and HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS: One of the challenges for the hospice volunteer is walking into the room as a stranger. Bridging the gap from being a stranger to a caring "extended" family member can be challenging in a short-term end-of-life highly emotional scenario. For the HOSPICE, an abbreviated version of Ourbeehive.net is available. It will lead the volunteer or caregiver through the process of quickly creating a story about a life experience that the family can email and share with extended family members and close friends. The process itself is initiated by the family and/or patient and provides the volunteer a structured and a meaningful experience for the family, the patient and the volunteer. Through this process the volunteer and staff gains a higher degree of understanding of the family dynamic helping transform the patient from "patient" status to "person" status. This results in increased empathy for the patient and family - enhancing both the perceived and actual level of care. FAMILY CAREGIVERS: For families responsible for the care of an elderly person, there are times when children and grandchildren need a tool to engage the patient. Imagine being able to have a tool that a younger person can use to engage the loved one in a meaningful way. Younger generation computer literate people can use OurBeehive.net as a platform for learning more about the patient's life and help see that person as a "person" rather than a "parent" or "grandparent". The patient benefits in the reminiscing experience and the care-giving family as a whole becomes more empathetic as a result plus the process captures stories that will be valued for generations. |
